get born, get bertho

here are two examples of paintings by french artist philippe bertho. his imagination makes me feel small and dead. what an insane combination of pop art and the surreal.

This really makes my head hurt, sweetie.

:3 And you are just as painfully great in your own rights. We can't compare unique-ness. That just wouldn't be fair.

I met Philippe in Boston in November. He's amazing.
I'm going to be at Congress tonight, maybe I'll see you and wave?

Those are mind blowing. The sort of blowing your mind gets from a good blow dryer, when you can't really hear anything and you're head is super hot. Yeah, exactly.

I seriously suggest you check out some of Salvador Dali's work if you're interested in realism meets dreams of a crack addict.

I don't know who this Dali guy thinks he is-he's got a killer 'stache, but I like my clocks in their solid form (thank you very much). But Bertho's paintings look like Pleasantville.
Or The Truman Show.
Minus Jim Carey of course.

did you say "Painting?" You would have an easier time convincing me that the are photographs set up and taken than that one man could have so much depth and imagination.

It is.

I like surreal paintings.
You know Salvador Dali, he's made really cool and original ones. Very impressive.

I can say the same about you. The things you do and write make me feel as though my writing is nothing. You are amazing in your own way!

they make you think, something i rarely do...
small and dead? hmm... they make me feel entranced.

They make me want to sit quietly and do nothing. Is that me falling through life?

these kind of remind me of the dada movement with a more modern twist and a little less anger. I really like the sensuallness of them...like you could reach out and pull the little man out like an action figure. They are very realistic almost like a picture.

that's really interesting. I seriously stared at it for like 10 minutes before realizing I was slowly spacing out. it catches the eye.

Pretty fresh. I see what you mean.
I want to pick this man's brain, plant the harvest and hope the apples don't fall too far from the tree. Thanks.

i am so very glad that you are A.) sharing with us things that you like in terms of art and design (besides your own stuff, jerk)...B.) left comments on, even though you get a few 'winners'... C.) show us that yes, you also waste time looking at random junk on the internet.

see you in the Village, for our next monthly "Hi I know you...Okay, bye!"

XO.

Wow ! this guy thinks out of the box . I wish my mind was that flexible . Compared to him my mind has cramps and broken legs .

that's pretty insane. i'm looking for paintings and shit for my room. maybe i'll get one of his somehow.

I especially like the first one. The way it looks like you're seeing the background pattern through a magnifying glass or far from away is really interesting.

wow, it really gives off the illusion of 3d space... very cool!

have you ever heard of frank stella? i think you'd like his later paintings (the ones from the 90s).

Anonymous said...

That's really amazing! Thanks for showing me that, I'm gonna look up more of that artist now.

that's awesome. funky, but...i dunno how to describe it. i wish i had money....and my own apartment to put one in...meh.

Anonymous said...

I honestly don't get both. :(

It catches attention in its own little ways and I cannot describe how much it hurt my brain thinking about what the painting could probably mean. :(

"Small and dead," Pete, no. I still remember that picture you posted on your Clandestine buzznet account. The one where you drew an eye on your right hand? Yeah, I can't describe itas well. You make me feel small and dead, if you didn't know. In fact, I think you make tons of people feel that way because of your raaad imagination.

You are a mad man, dude. :]
I love yaa.
Keep it up!

Oh, and when you find out what it means, please share. ;) Cause I have a feeling I will never understand it unless someone tells me. :)

Much love.
Jamie :]

I peruse all of the comments,
find interesting ones,
and read their journals.

Beware if you don't want to be read,
hide the originality.

(write how much you love
everything this thirty year old kid
is selling you.
and I won't even glance a second time at your comment.)

it is very dali-esque meets lichtenstein meets warhol. Art like that needs to make a major resurgence this century. seeing other's amazing work can make you feel like what you've done so far seem like nothing. just use it as a catalyst to improve

those are sweet...it kind of hurts your eyes to look at it though. bertho is a very talented guy.

Anonymous said...

wow. that really makes my eyes hurt.

don't feel dead. we love your writings. we really do.

You know Pete, if you like that you'd probably like Takashi Murakami. He's the genius behind some of Louis Vuitton's bags, Kanye's single cover, and japanese anime-esque styled artwork.

He's currently got some of his stuff at MOCA LA, maybe you should go and check it out.

After all...who doesn't like sculptures of ejaculating?

they make me feel like i am looking at something that i can't understand. that's why i love it.

I love his use of circles. Thanks for the intro to a new (to me) artist.

On another art note: I got an FOB inspired tattoo...a picture of it is on my page. It turned out beautifully so thanks to you guys for making the music. : )
